Carry on Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham
Nat Bowditch is at the end of a long-line of sea-faring men. From a very young age Nat had a mind for figures. He was so good that he almost got in trouble for being accused of cheating. Nat’s school career ends soon, however. He eventually becomes a sailor and becomes rich through trade. Nat’s adventurous young life leads him to be a good sailor. Nat likes to share his knowledge with other sailors and frequently talks to the captain who always says to him, “Carry on, Mr. Bowditch!” I would recommend this book to mature 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This book contains an interesting plot, but might not appeal to 6th graders. However, I would recommend this book for anyone who likes to read.

Witch Child by Celia Rees
Mary and her grandmother are accused of being witches. A group of men take Mary’s grandmother away and “proved” she was a witch. They killed her in front of the whole village. Someone took care of Mary for a while and told her something very important, that she was going to America. Mary has a very joyful and stressful journey. If you read this book, you’ll like it a lot. I recommend this book for all middle school students (grades six to eight). It’s a very fascinating story. Some parts are full of suspense. Mary’s journeys are great and wonderful to read.

Find out what happens by reading the book. I would recommend this series to those who are looking for a great read.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Long ago, in a land called Middle Earth, there lived a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who wasn’t adventurous until a wizard named Gandalf recruited him to help a dwarf named Thorin Oakenshield an his twelve companions to recover Thorin’s ancestor’s treasure from a fire-breathing dragon named Smaug. But first, Bilbo has to defeat meat-eating trolls, escape from evil goblins, beat the slimy creature Gollum in a game of riddles, fight gigantic spiders, and survive other obstacles that threaten to destroy their quest. I would recommend this book to other students because it had great characters and excellent descriptions of characters and their feelings.
