Carry on Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham
Nat Bowditch is at the end of a long-line of sea-faring men. From a very young age Nat had a mind for figures. He was so good that he almost got in trouble for being accused of cheating. Nat’s school career ends soon, however. He eventually becomes a sailor and becomes rich through trade. Nat’s adventurous young life leads him to be a good sailor. Nat likes to share his knowledge with other sailors and frequently talks to the captain who always says to him, “Carry on, Mr. Bowditch!” I would recommend this book to mature 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This book contains an interesting plot, but might not appeal to 6th graders. However, I would recommend this book for anyone who likes to read.

I just read "Return to Treasure Island" and this sounds like it may be a good companion book. Thanks for a great review!
